Churchtown Pipe Band, which is located in the Castlemitchell area of Athy in Co. Kildare, was founded in 1919 during the War of Independence. The band continued to go from strength to strength with members like Gerry Byrne winning the All Ireland Solo Piping competitions, the band was broadcasting on national radio from 1935 to 1955. During these years the band excelled in competitions all over Ireland.
After many years of inactivity the present band was restarted and it has been a great success ever since. In 2009 the band got an invitation to play in Grandvillier in France, which is twinned with Athy, to mark the ocassion of Bastille Day. The band had the honour of playing for President Mary McAleese in 2009, 2010 and 2011 when she officially opened the National Ploughing Championships in Athy.
The band have played at various parades, football matches, weddings, funerals and charity events around Ireland. We are pleased to discuss the nedds of event organisers.
Churchtown Pipe Band has now grown to 6 drummers and 7 pipers and we are always delighted to have new members. The band practises every Friday at 8pm in Castlemitchell Hall.
